‘Teacher of the Month’ recognized for her leadership through music and love

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Every month, we highlight an educator in the Cape Fear who’s going above and beyond.

WWAY’s Tomika Jackson introduces us to a teacher who says music and love helps her connect with the little learners in her classroom.

“I’m standing outside of Sunset Park Elementary in New Hanover County where we’re about to swim in meet our Teacher of the Month.

Meet Natasha Grady, our December Teacher of the Month! The nomination says it all: “She’s a true school hero who gives love, light, and leadership. And when we asked Ms. Grady what this moment means to her—she didn’t hold back.”

“Right now, I am extremely happy. It lets me realize that my hard work doesn’t go unnoticed because I don’t just teach—I’m a voice for my students and parents who can’t advocate for themselves,” Grady stated.

That voice has been echoing through sunset park for six years—but her journey started long before that.

“I’ve almost 20 years in the system—from driving a bus to being a TA—and now a teacher. I just worked my way up the ladder,” Grady explained.

And her secret weapon? Music—and a whole lot of love.

“Love is my strongest piece. Love covers a multitude of things—and God is love. Without that, I couldn’t do what I do. I feel like that speaks me and allows me to reach my students,” Grady shared.

And if you ask her what advice she’d give future educators—she keeps it real.

“Be you. Don’t try to teach like anyone else. Know what your kids need—and give them that, plus a little more,” Grady said.

From kindergarten foundations to lifelong lessons—Natasha Grady is building more than classrooms. She’s building futures. Congratulations Ms. Grady, our December Teacher of the Month!
