Free tax preparation and filing programs begin in February in New Hanover County

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — New Hanover County announced that starting the beginning of February, residents can receive free tax preparations and filing by trained volunteers.
Starting February 2, New Hanover County residents can ger assistance from trained IRS-certified volunteers through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and AARP Tax-Aide programs.
These services are for any resident regardless of age but intended for those with low-to-moderate income levels.
“We are delighted to be able to continue offering free tax preparation services here in New Hanover County,” said Senior Resource Center Director Amber Smith. “This will be our 48th year hosting the VITA program, serving more than 2,500 residents last year alone. It wouldn’t be possible without our trained and certified volunteers, and we’re so thankful for their dedication to helping our community.”
The following locations will have tax help available:
- NHC Senior Resource Center: 2222 South College Road, Wilmington
- Monday-Friday 9-11 a.m.
- Drop off tax preparation by appointment only
- Clients must complete VITA tax packet before arriving
- Kure Beach First Baptist Church: 208 S 6th Avenue, Kure Beach
- Monday-Friday 9-11 a.m.
- In-person tax preparation on a first-come, first-served basis
- Clients must wait in their vehicles until they are served
- Clients are required to complete a VITA tax packet prior to arrival
- MLK Community Center: 401 S. 8th Street, Wilmington
- Monday-Friday 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
- In person tax preparation by appointment only
- Clients are required to complete an AARP tax packet prior to arrival
