Important Winter safety tips
NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY)– As temperatures dip, power can go out, and some people may be planning to use alternative sources of heat like generators to provide backup power.
According to the Portable Generator Manufacturer’s Association, using a generator inside your home is dangerous due to the accumulation of carbon monoxide, and other harmful gases. The gases can cause headaches, dizziness, nausea, unconsciousness, or death.
Toni Scollins is the Injury and Violence Prevention Coordinator for Novant Health, and she says to prevent these injuries, she recommends having a working carbon monoxide detector.
“I want to advice everybody to have a c02 detector in their home. You can get them at any of the big box stores, and if you don’t have access to one, you can check with your local fire department. They have access to low cost to no cost, depending on your income and need,” said Scollins.
Some more winter safety tips include:
- Putting salt in driveways to prevent fall
- Having extra food and water
- Making sure you have a week or more of any prescription medications
- Checking on your elderly neighbors
