Robeson County inmate back in custody after escaping Columbus County Detention Center

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The Columbus County Sheriff’s Office says a man is back in custody after impersonating an inmate who was scheduled to be released.
Robeson County inmate, 26-year-old Zion Britt, was being held at the Columbus County Detention Center temporarily. He was being held in connection with an alleged 2021 homicide.
According to the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office, Britt was captured around 5 Thursday morning at the Motel 6 on Lackey Street in Lumberton.
Columbus County Sheriff’s Office said after discovering the release, they initiated a coordinated response and worked until Britt was found.
Britt was originally charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy.
Court documents say Britt is now being charged with escape from county confinement facility and forgery of instrument in Columbus County.
“The defendant signed another inmates name with the purpose of and intent to escape prison. The defendant acted without authority and with the intent to injure and defraud,” court documents said.
The investigation into Britt’s escape is ongoing.
