WWAY viewers capture images of rare snow event in the Cape Fear

CAPE FEAR, NC (WWAY) — While many in the Wilmington area spent much of Saturday wondering when the snow would arrive, it finally did late Saturday night.

Based on the numerous photos and videos that many viewers sent to WWAY, lots of people were outside on Sunday, enjoying a walk or playing in the snow.

From snow-covered holly berries to a donkey with icicles around its eyes, Cape Fear residents captured the beauty of this rare weather event in lots of unique ways.

When Hope Cate woke up Sunday morning and looked outside, everything on her porch was covered with about 4 inches of snow.

In Brunswick County, Kelly Barker captured this photo of the Swain’s Cut Bridge connecting Oak Island to the mainland.

Her photo showed people sledding down the embankment on either side of the bridge.

In Supply, Amy Fulford woke up to a winter wonderland, something she said brought back a lot of memories.

“I was really excited about it,” Fulford said. “The last snow I really saw like this was 1989, I was 7 years old. And it just brought me back to those memories of being a child and having, I mean, that was really my first time ever seeing snow.”

In Columbus County, Lisa Wyatt said, at first, she was underwhelmed by the snow outside her Reigelwood home.

“I was hoping to get at least 8 inches and I was kinda disappointed when the first, you know, snow, started falling and it just quit and I was like oh, no, my prediction didn’t come true,” Wyatt said. “But then later, after it started again, I guess around 8:30ish, I was like yes, it’s here.”

Her final assessment of the storm?

“I thought it was wonderful.”

And what’s a snow day without a snow angel?

Lisa Rabito sent us these photos of her family enjoying the snow and her daughter getting ready to make a snow angel.

Leise Terry was seen having some fun in the powdery snow.

Tommie Ross sent in a photo showing his baby girl in a fuzzy blanket, enjoying her first snow ever!

WWAY got several pictures showing animals in the snow, including several from Kelly Gates of her donkey.

It’s wearing a donkey jacket, but after spending a few hours outside, there’s snow and icicles in its fur.

Emily Partain sent in a photo of her dog, Pink.

Patrica Burgard’s two dogs have very different reactions to the snow.

“So the little black and white one, her name is Susie, she’s 8 years and she just wasn’t having it so she didn’t like it, she wasn’t having it,” Burgard said. “His name is Miles, he’s actually a Chuweiny and he, he followed me out there and you know, he still didn’t like it. But he was receipting of it.”

It was certainly no ‘day at the beach’ for a coyote, captured in a video walking across the snow-covered dunes at the south end of Topsail Beach.

Thanks to Shannon Crownover for sending that one.

Back in Wilmington near Murraysville, Tamara Norman was busy capturing some of the wildlife in her backyard.

“It was so beautiful, and I feed the birds and, and I love when they come, and I just love how the cardinal just stands out against the white snow. And they make me happy.”

Thank you to everyone who has sent in photos and videos.

We look forward to receiving even more in the coming days.
