Free tax preparation and filing programs begin February 2nd in New Hanover County

New Hanover County, NC (WWAY) — Starting February 2nd, residents can receive free tax preparation and filing by trained, IRS-certified volunteers through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and AARP Tax-Aide programs. 

These programs will be available for free through April 15th for New Hanover County residents, regardless of age.

Some locations require appointments, while others will operate on a first-come, first-serve basis.

These tax preparation services are intended for people with low-to-moderate income levels (annual income less than $100,000). 

Tax preparation will be available at the following locations:
NHC Senior Resource Center: 2222 South College Road, Wilmington
  • Monday-Friday (9-11 a.m.): Drop off tax preparation by appointment only.
  • Clients must complete a VITA tax packet prior to arrival. VITA packets for this location can be picked up Monday through Friday (8 a.m.-5 p.m.) at the NHC Senior Resource Center starting January 20.

Kure Beach First Baptist Church: 208 S 6th Ave, Kure Beach
  • Monday-Friday (9-11 a.m.): In-person tax preparation on a first-come, first-served basis. Appointments are not required, but there will be limited availability each day. Clients must wait in their vehicle until they are served.
  • Clients are required to complete a VITA tax packet prior to arrival. VITA packets for this location can be picked up outside the Kure Beach First Baptist Church near the VITA entrance starting Jan. 26.
MLK Community Center (City of Wilmington): 401 S. 8th Street, Wilmington
  • Monday-Friday (10 a.m.-1 p.m.): In-person tax preparation by appointment only.
  • Clients are required to complete an AARP tax packet prior to arrival. AARP packets for this location can be picked up at the MLK Community Center during open hours or at the front desk at the Main NHC Library (230 Grace Street, Suite A).
