North Carolina ranks among top states searching for remote work, study finds
(WWAY) — North Carolina residents are among the most eager in the nation to work from home, according to a new study analyzing online search trends for remote jobs.
The analysis, conducted by job site Remote Rocketship, reviewed Google search data from all 50 states to determine which parts of the country show the most interest in work-from-home opportunities.
North Carolina ranked second nationwide, with 1,362.39 remote job-related searches per 100,000 residents between April 2024 and March 2025.
Georgia topped the list as the “work-from-home capital,” recording 1,549.65 searches per 100,000 residents. Florida placed third at 1,314.47.
The study found Southern states dominate interest in remote work, with seven of the top 10 states located in the South. Mississippi ranked fourth, followed by Tennessee in fifth place.
Job seekers most commonly searched phrases like “jobs work from home” and “jobs remote,” with “Indeed remote jobs” also ranking among the top terms.
South Carolina, Virginia, Arizona and Nevada rounded out the top 10 states most interested in remote work opportunities.
Remote Rocketship founder Lior Neu-ner said the findings highlight shifting workforce priorities, particularly in the South.
“The high number of remote job searches we’re seeing in Southern states points to a big shift in where people want to work that companies should be paying attention to,” Neu-ner said.
He added that factors such as wages and regional job markets may be driving the trend, noting Georgia’s minimum wage is among the lowest in the country, making higher-paying remote opportunities more attractive.
