HAMPSTEAD, NC (WWAY) — The Pender County Sheriff’s Office has arrested the treasurer of the Topsail High School Boosters Club after investigators said she embezzled more than $50,000 from the organization.

The sheriff’s office said it was notified Friday by Topsail High School administration and the boosters club of possible criminal activity involving financial information. Investigators later determined the boosters club treasurer, Erin Coleen Schmidt of Hampstead, had taken funds in excess of $50,000, the agency said.

Deputies arrested Schmidt on Wednesday and served her with felony warrants charging her with obtaining property by false pretenses, money laundering less than $100,000 and embezzlement, according to the sheriff’s office.

Schmidt was taken before a magistrate and placed in the Pender County Jail under a $5,000 secured bond, the sheriff’s office said.
