SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — The North Carolina Ferry System will temporarily close the Southport–Fort Fisher Ferry Route for repairs next week.

Officials say ferry service between Southport and Fort Fisher will be suspended March 9-10 while crews conduct ramp repairs at both terminals.

The work is needed to allow the route to operate normally and remove the weight restrictions currently in place.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation says the ferry route has been operating under weight restrictions since a ramp at the Southport terminal was damaged in September.

Under those restrictions, no vehicles over 18 tons are allowed onto the ramp. This includes tractor trailers, dump trucks, heavy equipment, fuel tankers, and similar types of vehicles

Transportation officials say the project is expected to take no more than two days, weather permitting.

Once repairs are completed, the ferry route will reopen and return to its full winter schedule.
