BRUNSWICK COUNTY (WWAY) — Orton is conducting a prescribed burn on 325 acres Thursday as part of its management plan to improve forest health and restore longleaf pine habitat.

According to a news release, strict criteria such as optimal weather has been considered for today’s burn, in accordance with an approved plan that ensures the safety of people and property in the area.

Burning is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. and should be finished by 6 p.m.

Orton says its annual prescribed fire regimen, together with the efforts of local partners, plays a significant role in a larger, range-wide public-private effort to build resilience in this special habitat.

This work is guided by conservation philanthropist Louis Bacon, who has spent more than two decades  protecting natural resources in southeastern North Carolina.
