Historical Society of Topsail Island to award 2026 scholarships

TOPSAIL BEACH, NC (WWAY) — The Historical Society of Topsail Island (HSTI) has awarded scholarships to local high school seniors for more than 30 years. The community is invited to celebrate this year’s recipients at a luncheon in their honor on April 9, 2026, at the Historic Assembly Building.
“The Historical Society of Topsail Island is pleased to award scholarships annually to local high school students to support their educational pursuits,” said Karen Gavigan, Chair of the HSTI Education Committee. “Recipients are selected based on academic achievement, community involvement, and extracurricular participation. HSTI is honored to recognize this year’s four exceptional students.”
This year’s scholarship recipients, all seniors at Topsail High School, include:
- Camren Reaves, who will present the essay The Legend of the Washington Oak: How Ham and a Tree Shaped Hampstead’s Identity
- Lily Rumley, recognized for her linocut art prints and essay on the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP)
- Anna Swan, who will present the essay Anchored to the Past: The Sloop Point Plantation
- Shane Taylor, who will present the essay The William H. Sumner: A Shipwreck, A Death, and a Mystery Buried in the Sands
