SURF CITY, NC (WWAY) — Surf City Police Chief Phillip Voorhees has announced plans to retire later this year after nearly two decades of service to the town.

Voorhees said he will retire on Sept. 1, 2026, and will remain in his role during the transition to help onboard the department’s next chief.

“It has been a great honor to serve the citizens of Surf City and to lead the men and women of the Police Department,” Voorhees said. “I am proud of what we have accomplished together, and I am confident in the strong foundation that has been built for the future.”

Voorhees has served the town for nearly 19 years and has been chief since January 2022. During his tenure, he focused on professional policing, community engagement and the use of technology and data-driven strategies to improve public safety.

Town leaders say the department expanded community policing efforts and strengthened partnerships with local and regional agencies under his leadership.

“On behalf of the Surf City Town Council and our community, we thank Chief Voorhees for his dedicated service, forward-thinking leadership, and commitment to public safety,” Mayor Teresa Batts said. “His innovative programs and lasting impact have strengthened our department and community, and he will be sincerely missed.”

Voorhees said he is grateful for his time serving the Surf City community and is looking ahead to the future.

“While it has been a great honor to serve, I am also looking forward to the next chapter,” he said. “I will always be grateful to the citizens of Surf City for their support, trust, and partnership. It has truly been a privilege to serve this community.”
