NFL’s Alex Highsmith to headline derby-style event during Azalea Festival weekend

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A Kentucky Derby-style event during Azalea Festival weekend will bring a hometown NFL star back to Wilmington while honoring two local leaders.
“The Signature,” now in its fifth year, will take place Saturday from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Smoke on the Water.
The event benefits the Alex Highsmith Family Foundation and the Barbara Highsmith Reading Academy of Wilmington.
Pittsburgh Steeler linebacker Alex Highsmith, a former Ashley High School standout and Wilmington native, is expected to attend.
Organizers say this year’s event will honor Bill Saffo with the 2026 Signature Award of Appreciation. Hilda DeLeon will receive the 2026 Signature Community Excellence Award.
The awards ceremony is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
The derby-style celebration encourages guests to wear traditional attire such as large hats, sundresses, seersucker and bow ties. The event will feature music, dancing, giveaways, signature drinks, a cigar lounge and best-dressed contests.
Organizers say the event was created to bring people of diverse backgrounds together during one of Wilmington’s busiest weekends.
“The Signature will be a continued annual event supporting community charities and recognizing distinguished community leaders in Wilmington,” said Ronnie Highsmith, president of Highsmith Branding Group. “The funds raised will not only help impact those most in need but also support programs to motivate youth to be leaders in their respective communities.”
Tickets are sold out in advance but will be available at the door. The event is open to guests 21 and older.
