WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Cape Fear Community College is introducing a new initiative aimed at helping aspiring entrepreneurs turn ideas into viable businesses.

The college’s Small Business Center, in partnership with Bank OZK, has announced the launch of the Startup Acceleration & Idea Launch (SAIL) program, a 10-week training cohort and pitch competition designed specifically for first-time founders.

The program will offer a mix of workshops, hands-on learning, and one-on-one guidance to help participants move from early-stage ideas to fully developed business plans. Organizers say the goal is to provide a structured path for individuals who are new to entrepreneurship.

The SAIL program will be led by Cherith Roberson, a business coach, speaker, and author of The Guided Small Business Planner. Roberson previously served as director of the Small Business Center at Wake Technical Community College and now runs her own consulting business, Flourish in Growth.

Sessions will run weekly from Aug. 20 through Oct. 29, meeting from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Most sessions will be held virtually, with the exception of the first meeting and the final pitch competition, which will take place in person.

Participation in the program is free, but enrollment is limited to 15 participants. Those selected will also have the opportunity to compete for startup funding, with cash prizes awarded to the top three finalists.

“Starting a business can be challenging, but programs like SAIL provide the structure and support entrepreneurs need to succeed,” said Jerry Coleman, director of CFCC’s Small Business Center. “We are committed to equipping individuals with the tools, knowledge, and confidence to build strong, resilient businesses.”

The program is open to residents of New Hanover and Pender counties who are in the early stages of developing a business. Applicants must be first-time entrepreneurs who have created their business idea within the past six months and have not yet generated income.

Applications are now open through the Small Business Center’s website.
