Wildfire at Whitehall Plantation near Atkinson now 30% contained

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Fire crews continue working to contain a wildfire burning at Whitehall Plantation near Atkinson.
According to the Pender County Fire Marshal’s Office, the fire has burned approximately 275 acres and is about 30% contained. Officials say the fire’s perimeter is currently estimated at around 3.5 miles.
Crews have made steady progress, and at this time, no homes or structures are threatened. No injuries have been reported among civilians or emergency personnel.
Fire suppression efforts remain active, with crews from the North Carolina Forest Service and the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission continuing to work on the scene. Officials say their focus is on strengthening containment lines and monitoring conditions to prevent further spread.
Residents in nearby areas may continue to see and smell smoke for an extended period as crews work toward full containment.
Officials are also reminding the public that a burn ban remains in effect due to ongoing drought conditions and elevated fire risk. Outdoor burning of any kind is prohibited.
