WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Robert T. Burrus Jr. has been named provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of North Carolina Wilmington following a national search, university officials announced.

Burrus, who currently serves in the role on an interim basis, will officially transition into the permanent position on May 1. During his time as interim provost, he provided leadership through a period of transition, helping guide academic priorities and key institutional initiatives while maintaining continuity across campus.

University leaders say Burrus will play a critical role as UNCW continues to grow and evolve.

“As UNCW approaches its 80th anniversary, we are experiencing extraordinary momentum, and Dr. Burrus will serve in a pivotal role, guiding our academic mission into the future,” said Aswani K. Volety. “From launching new programs to integrating technology-infused learning into even more academic experiences, Rob will be at the forefront of helping UNCW advance its mission while navigating complex challenges in higher education.”

Burrus brings nearly three decades of experience to the position, having joined the UNCW faculty in 1998. Over the years, he has held several leadership roles, including chair of the Department of Economics and Finance and associate dean for undergraduate programs.

As provost, Burrus will serve as the university’s chief academic officer, reporting directly to the chancellor and overseeing all academic programs and initiatives. His responsibilities will include advancing teaching, research, and scholarship while supporting student, faculty, and staff success through collaboration and innovation.

“UNCW’s strong academic foundation, its commitment to student success and its growing momentum make this an especially meaningful time to lead the Division of Academic Affairs,” Burrus said. “I look forward to working with faculty, staff, students and community partners to advance academic excellence, expand opportunity and help shape a future where UNCW continues to thrive.”

University officials say Burrus’ leadership will help strengthen UNCW’s academic foundation while expanding its regional and global impact.
