MECKLENBURG COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A Cary man has been arrested in connection to an alleged scam targeting a Jones County family, according to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.

The Jones County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the SBI on March 18 regarding a reported scam. Investigators say the suspect contacted victims claiming their bank account had been compromised and demanded payment to fix the issue.

After a month-long investigation, authorities arrested 40-year-old Christopher Aaron Murray.

Murray is charged with one count of felony conspiracy, one count of felony obtaining property by false pretenses, one count of felony exploitation of a disabled or elderly person in a position of trust, and one count of impersonating a law enforcement officer.

He was taken into custody by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department at Charlotte Douglas International Airport and transported to the Mecklenburg County Detention Center. Officials say he is being held pending his first court appearance scheduled for tomorrow.

The investigation remains ongoing, and investigators believe there may be additional victims.

Anyone who believes they may have been targeted or victimized is encouraged to contact the Jones County Sheriff’s Office or the SBI’s Coastal District office.
