WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wilmington Fire Department said there’s still time to sign up for this year’s Junior Fire Academy.

It’s open to rising 9th – 12th graders

WFD said this free, week-long program gives students a firsthand look at life as a firefighter.

Participants will learn hands-only CPR, how to use a fire extinguisher, bike and pedestrian safety, and safe cooking practices — plus get the chance to suit up in turnout gear, see what it’s like to search for a victim, and take on the combat challenge.

Sessions will be held June 22 – 26 and July 27 – 31 at WFD Headquarters at 801 Market Street in Wilmington.

Daily hours for the program are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

On Fridays the day ends at 12 p.m.

Each session wraps up with a graduation ceremony and cookout for family and friends.

Lunch is provided daily.

Spots are limited, so if your teen is interested, WFD said to be sure to apply soon using this link.
