Tequila’s Waterfront restaurant closes, new concept planned for downtown Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A well-known downtown dining spot has officially closed, with plans already underway to bring a new restaurant concept to the same waterfront location.
Tequila’s Comida & Cantina Waterfront closed its doors on May 4 following what owners described as a mutual and amicable decision between Zephyr Development Co. and brothers Ramon Villasenor and Miguel Villasenor.
Since opening, the restaurant had been a staple in Wilmington’s downtown and Marina District, known for its lively atmosphere and waterfront views. In a joint statement, the ownership group thanked the community, staff, and patrons for their support over the years.
“While we are sad to see Tequila’s Waterfront come to a close, we are incredibly proud of what was built here and grateful for the memories created,” the statement read.
The closure marks a shift for both ownership groups. The Villasenor brothers plan to focus on expanding their growing business ventures, including a new Los Portales Supermarket location and other projects currently in development.
Meanwhile, Zephyr Development Co. says the waterfront space will soon be reimagined with a new restaurant concept led by Giorgios Bakatsias and the Giorgios Hospitality Group.
The upcoming concept is expected to bring a fresh dining experience to downtown Wilmington, though specific details have not yet been released. Additional information is anticipated in the coming weeks.
