WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Cape Fear Public Utility Authority (CFPUA) has scheduled a precautionary boil water advisory beginning Monday, May 11 for customers in the area surrounding 9th and Market Streets, as crews work to replace broken water valves.

Starting at 6 p.m. Monday, approximately 200 customers will be affected across multiple blocks in downtown Wilmington, including portions of Market, Orange, Dock, Princess, and several surrounding streets.

CFPUA officials said customers may experience temporary service interruptions during the valve replacement work. The advisory is being issued out of an abundance of caution due to periods of low or no water pressure, which can increase the risk of back siphonage and potential contamination in the water system.

During the boil water advisory, customers are advised to boil tap water for at least one minute and allow it to cool before use. Alternatively, bottled water may be used.

Boiled or alternative water should be used for drinking, brushing teeth, making ice, food preparation, washing fruits and vegetables, pet consumption, and preparing infant formula.

Before the advisory is lifted, CFPUA laboratory staff will test water samples to ensure the system is safe for consumption.
