LELAND, NC (WWAY) — Drivers in Leland are now using a newly completed roundabout near Ocean Gate Plaza after the roadway reopened Monday afternoon.

The road reopened just after 1 p.m. Monday, marking a major milestone in a months-long intersection improvement project in the Westgate area.

Construction began in January at Ocean Gate Plaza and New Pointe Boulevard as part of an effort to improve safety and connectivity within the busy commercial corridor.

As part of the project, Ocean Gate Plaza had been closed from U.S. Highway 17 to the roundabout for several months while crews worked on the upgrades.

The project included construction of a new teardrop roundabout, along with sidewalks, pedestrian crosswalks, updated pavement markings and new street signage.

Town officials say the improvements are designed to improve safety and traffic flow for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists traveling through the area.
