WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Cape Fear Public Utility Authority (CFPUA) has issued a precautionary boil water advisory beginning Monday, May 19, for customers in the area of Carolina Beach Road and South Carolina Avenue while crews complete water system repairs.

Starting at 9 p.m. Monday, approximately 80 customers will be affected by the advisory due to work to replace broken water valves in the area. Officials said customers may experience temporary water service interruptions during the repair work.

The advisory covers the 1700 to 2000 blocks of Carolina Beach Road; all of Alabama Avenue, Elm Street, Poplar Street, Honeysuckle Street, Kentucky Avenue, and Amphitheatre Drive; the 500 and 600 blocks of North Carolina Avenue; the 200 to 600 blocks of South Carolina Avenue; the 1800 block of Washington Street; the 600 block of Tennessee Avenue; and the 1800 and 1900 blocks of West Lake Shore Drive.

CFPUA officials said that periods of low or no water pressure can increase the risk of contaminants entering the distribution system through back siphonage, prompting the precautionary advisory.

Customers under the advisory are instructed to boil water for at least one minute before consumption, including drinking, brushing teeth, making ice, cooking, washing produce, pet use, and preparing infant formula. Bottled water is also recommended as an alternative. Officials noted that boiling is not necessary for bathing or showering.

Before the advisory is lifted, CFPUA laboratory staff will test water samples to confirm that the system is safe for consumption.
