Authorities searching for missing man last seen on Figure Eight Island

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office is searching for a missing man last seen at a beach access on Figure Eight Island in New Hanover County.

According to officials, Jared Ulson Wheeler, 39, was last seen on May 24, 2026, at the 8 Bayberry Place beach access on Figure Eight Island. He was reportedly shirtless and wearing brown swim trunks at the time.

Wheeler is described as 6 feet 3 inches tall, weighing approximately 235 pounds, with an average build, blue eyes, and a bald head.

The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating and asking for the public’s assistance in locating him.
