Major expansion underway at North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher
FORT FISHER, N.C. (WWAY) — A major transformation is now underway at the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher.
Part of the marine building is undergoing a major renovation. The expansion will feature a massive 400-thousand-gallon sand tiger shark habitat, an expansion of the coral exhibit, and an interactive shark and ray touch pool. Communications Manager Deyanira Romo Rossell says she’s excited and it will serve a good purpose for bringing animals and the community together.
“We are really a place for people to come and really have a good time, but most of the time we hear them say how often they connect with the animals and they understand the importance of conservation, so it’s really exciting to be a part of all that and keep that connection going,” said Rossell.
While the aquarium is closed, visitors can still experience Discovery Bay at Independence Mall. The temporary exhibit will feature sea creatures, carnivorous plants, and a gift shop. Officials also encourage the public to visit North Carolina’s other aquariums across the state.
The official groundbreaking ceremony for the massive renovation and expansion project will be Thursday at 11 a.m.
