Leland animal ordinance changes take effect June 1

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — Updated regulations for poultry, livestock and wild animals within Leland town limits take effect June 1.
The Leland Police Department says it will begin issuing citations to property owners who are not in compliance with the updated ordinance.
The changes place restrictions on the ownership of certain animals based on property size and animal type. The ordinance also establishes rules for the location and size of animal enclosures.
Under the ordinance, roosters and several types of birds are prohibited within town limits. Livestock must also meet minimum land requirements.
Town leaders say the changes were adopted to address concerns related to noise, public health, sanitation and neighborhood impacts, while also supporting animal welfare.
