Overnight lane closures planned for Wrightsville Beach bridge

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Drivers traveling to and from Wrightsville Beach should prepare for overnight lane closures on the Causeway Drive bridge beginning next week.
The N.C. Department of Transportation announced that contract crews will begin drilling operations through the bridge deck for testing on June 1. The work will take place on the Causeway Drive bridge, part of U.S. 76 over Banks Channel, between North Channel Drive and Waynick Boulevard.
To accommodate the project, nightly lane closures will be in effect Monday through Friday from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. During those hours, both eastbound lanes will be closed while the two westbound lanes will be reconfigured to allow a single lane of traffic in each direction.
Transportation officials said the overnight schedule was selected to reduce impacts on traffic during the busy summer season. Lane closures on the bridge are being limited to nighttime hours between Memorial Day and Labor Day to help minimize disruptions during peak travel periods.
The drilling work is expected to continue through June 26, weather permitting.
NCDOT is encouraging motorists to use caution when crossing the bridge, allow additional travel time and pay close attention to posted signs and traffic patterns while crews are working.
