WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Families looking for a creative way to kick off summer can head to UNCW’s Kenan Auditorium later this month as the 2026 SEAHAWK Family Arts Matinees season opens with a performance by Wilmington favorite Mr. Scooter.

The SEAHAWK Family Arts Matinees, known as SEAHAWK FAM, begin Thursday, June 25, with an interactive show designed to entertain and inspire children through storytelling, music and audience participation.

Mr. Scooter, a Wilmington-based storyteller, rapper and children’s librarian, will take the stage at 10:30 a.m. with a performance that blends literacy and hip-hop. Known for making reading exciting and accessible for young audiences, he has earned national recognition for his creative literacy programs and energetic live performances.

His work includes the popular Book Wrangler and Rap Battle of the Books programs, along with performances as “Melvil Dewey – International Library Hip Hop Superstar.” His contributions to literacy education have earned him honors including recognition as a Library Journal Mover & Shaker Innovator and a NACO Award recipient.

According to Kenan Auditorium, SEAHAWK FAM is designed to provide affordable live entertainment for families throughout the summer, featuring performances that encourage creativity and discovery for audiences of all ages.

During the June 25 matinee, Mr. Scooter will use original songs, storytelling and humor to transform books into an interactive experience aimed at encouraging children to view reading as an adventure. Organizers say the show is especially suited for elementary-aged children and their families.

Tickets for the performance are $5 and are available through the Kenan Auditorium box office and online through UNCW Arts Tickets.
