Manhunt continues for Richlands man accused of shooting at Onslow deputy
ONSLOW COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Authorities are continuing their search for a Richlands man accused of firing a gun at an Onslow County Sheriff’s Office deputy during a foot chase Monday evening.
According to the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 8:15 p.m. Monday to the area of 1945 Pony Farm Road after receiving a report of a suspicious person.
When a deputy made contact with the man, later identified as 31-year-old Jarred Louis Mackey, investigators say he provided a false name.
As the deputy continued investigating, Mackey’s true identity was discovered. Authorities said Mackey then ran off, leading to a brief pursuit.
During the chase, investigators say Mackey pulled a handgun and fired a shot toward the deputy. The deputy was not struck by the gunfire and suffered only minor injuries during the incident.
Law enforcement agencies, including the Jacksonville Police Department and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, immediately launched a search for Mackey in the southwestern part of Onslow County. The manhunt remained active Tuesday as authorities continued following leads.
Mackey was already wanted on an outstanding warrant for manufacturing marijuana, according to the sheriff’s office. He now faces additional charges, including:
- Attempted first-degree murder
- Assault on a law enforcement officer with a firearm
- Assault by pointing a gun
- Two counts of resisting a public officer
- Assault on a government official
Authorities said Mackey is a convicted felon and is considered armed and dangerous. Investigators believe he may still be carrying a handgun.
The sheriff’s office described Mackey as 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing about 165 pounds. He was last seen wearing a blue collared shirt and black shorts.
Anyone who sees Mackey is urged not to approach him and instead call 911 immediately.
