Pirate Week returns to Ocean Isle Beach with sword fighting, ghost walks and family fun

OCEAN ISLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — The Museum of Coastal Carolina and the Town of Ocean Isle Beach are inviting residents and visitors to celebrate the area’s rich pirate history during the annual Pirate Week, set for July 5-10.
The weeklong event will feature a variety of pirate-themed activities, educational programs, live demonstrations, and family-friendly entertainment designed to explore North Carolina’s connection to the Golden Age of Piracy.
Organizers say the state’s coastline was a hotspot for pirates due to its proximity to the Gulf Stream and its shallow waters and sandbars, which provided ideal conditions for maritime outlaws. Pirate Week aims to bring that history to life through interactive experiences and historical presentations.
The festivities begin with swordsmanship demonstrations and classes led by Sword Circle, a historical combat group from Garner. Participants ages 13 and older can learn the basics of medieval and historical sword fighting from instructor Alex Foster, who has nearly two decades of combat experience.
A popular Pirate Ghost Walk returns during the week, offering a guided evening stroll through Ocean Isle Beach featuring stories, legends, and folklore about famous pirates, including Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet. Organizers note that advance registration is required and the event typically sells out.
Children can enjoy Sea Shanties for Little Pirates, while history enthusiasts can attend a Sandbar Lecture Series presentation by author and historian Jack E. Fryar Jr. His talk, “Pirates of the Cape Fear,” will explore North Carolina’s role in the Golden Age of Piracy and the exploits of legendary figures such as Blackbeard, Calico Jack Rackham, Anne Bonny, Mary Read, and Stede Bonnet.
Several free family events will also take place at Town Center Park, including a Pirate Party in the Park, pirate-themed crafts, and an outdoor screening of the animated adventure film “Treasure Planet.”
Organizers say Pirate Week offers a unique opportunity for visitors of all ages to learn about coastal history while enjoying hands-on activities, entertainment, and community events.
Additional information, registration details, and event schedules are available through the Museum of Coastal Carolina and the Town of Ocean Isle Beach.
