KANNAPOLIS, N.C. — Wilmington native MC SHA-ROCK, widely recognized as a pioneering figure in hip-hop culture, has been named to the 2026 class of the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame.

The Hall of Fame announced Thursday that MC SHA-ROCK will be inducted alongside Sugar Bear of Experience Unlimited, Chapel Hill rock band Arrogance, Sugar Hill Records founder Barry Poss and jazz composer Billy Strayhorn.

Known as the first female MC in hip-hop culture, MC SHA-ROCK was a founding member of the influential group Funky 4 + 1. The group became the first hip-hop act to perform on national television when it appeared on “Saturday Night Live” in 1981, helping introduce the emerging genre to a wider audience.

Hall of Fame officials said MC SHA-ROCK helped establish early standards for lyrical delivery, microphone technique and live performance during hip-hop’s formative years in the late 1970s.

The North Carolina Music Hall of Fame also announced that Kannapolis native George Clinton, founder of Parliament and Funkadelic, will receive the 2026 Eddie Ray Lifetime Achievement Award. Clinton, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2009, is being recognized for more than five decades of influence on funk, hip-hop, R&B, rock and pop music.

Other members of the 2026 induction class include Sugar Bear of the go-go group Experience Unlimited, Chapel Hill-based rock band Arrogance, Sugar Hill Records founder Barry Poss and renowned jazz composer Billy Strayhorn.

The induction ceremony is scheduled for Oct. 15 at the Charles Mack Citizen Center in Mooresville.

The North Carolina Music Hall of Fame, founded in 1994, honors musicians and industry leaders with strong ties to the state and at least 10 years of national prominence.
