Wilmington doctor explains benefits and potential side effects of GLP-1 weight-loss medications
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — GLP-1 medications modulate a hormone that induces appetite.
While users lose weight, there are also potential side effects including nausea, constipation, diarrhea, and vision issues in rare cases.
Dr. Constance Foreman is a Family Medicine Physician with Novant Health.
Foreman said the tradeoffs are worth it for patients who typically have three weight-loss options: lifestyle changes, medications or surgery.
“Certainly most people don’t want surgery,” Foreman said. “So that means the lifestyle and medications are going to be your primary defense against most health conditions. And when it comes to weight management, ideally lifestyle is that initial intervention. So don’t do it just to get into the wedding dress or to get ready for your birthday, but continue to do these things for longevity and quality of life.”
Foreman added that quality of life includes managing stress, getting plenty of sleep and staying connected to your community.
