Wilmington native serves aboard one of the world’s largest warships

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A Wilmington native is serving aboard one of the world’s largest and most powerful naval vessels as part of the U.S. Navy’s ongoing mission around the globe.
Petty Officer 2nd Class Daniel Rochefort, a Wilmington native, is assigned as a logistics specialist aboard the USS Harry S. Truman, a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier based out of Norfolk, Virginia.
Rochefort graduated from West Brunswick High School in 2015 and is currently working toward a bachelor’s degree in logistics and supply chain management through American Military University. He plans to graduate in 2027.
Before joining the Navy, Rochefort said his experiences growing up in the Wilmington area helped prepare him for military life.
“Growing up in my hometown, I worked in the restaurant industry as a cook,” Rochefort said. “Balancing two jobs often led to 17-hour workdays, which helped me develop a strong work ethic.”
Rochefort joined the Navy seven years ago and said he wanted the opportunity to travel and experience the world.
“I am the first person in my family to join the Navy, and I wanted the opportunity to leave home and travel the world,” Rochefort said. “Throughout my career, I have visited 37 countries.”
As a logistics specialist, Rochefort helps support the operations and readiness of the aircraft carrier and its crew.
He said one of his proudest accomplishments has been taking on a leadership role aboard the ship.
“One of my proudest accomplishments is serving as the leading petty officer of a work center with nine Sailors,” Rochefort said. “I value the opportunity to lead junior Sailors and help them achieve their goals.”
The USS Harry S. Truman is among the largest warships in the world. The aircraft carrier stretches 1,092 feet long, is 252 feet wide and weighs more than 100,000 tons. More than 5,000 sailors serve aboard the ship, which operates as a mobile airfield capable of supporting global missions.
According to Navy officials, aircraft carriers serve as a key part of the nation’s defense strategy, providing power projection, maritime security, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief around the world.
The Navy says its sailors play an important role in protecting global commerce, with approximately 90% of the world’s trade traveling by sea and critical internet infrastructure relying on secure undersea cables.
As the Navy celebrates 250 years of service, Rochefort said his military career has provided opportunities for both personal and professional growth.
“Serving in the Navy gives me the resources and opportunities to provide for my son and family,” Rochefort said.
Rochefort also credited his family for supporting him throughout his Navy career.
“I would like to thank my sister and the mother of my son for their continued support throughout my career,” he said.
