Gas leak closes both directions of US 17 in Winnabow

WINNABOW, NC (WWAY) — A gas leak has forced the closure of both northbound and southbound lanes of U.S. 17 in Winnabow, prompting traffic detours and significant delays Friday.

According to the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, southbound U.S. 17 was initially closed at Green Hill Road, with traffic diverted onto Green Hill Road while crews responded to the leak.

Officials later expanded the closure, shutting down both directions of U.S. 17.

Northbound traffic is being stopped at Town Creek Park, while southbound traffic is being stopped at Zion Church Road.

Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area if possible, expect significant delays and follow directions from law enforcement officers and traffic control personnel.

Officials have not said what caused the gas leak or when the highway is expected to reopen.
