The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office provided updated detour information Friday morning as both northbound and southbound lanes of U.S. 17 remain closed due to a reported gas leak.
Officials are directing drivers to follow the designated alternate routes to avoid the closure area.

Drivers traveling south on U.S. 17, including those approaching from Mako Road or already on the highway, should use the following route:
➡️ Old Town Creek Road
➡️ Town Creek Road
➡️ Crab Apple Road
➡️ Cherry Tree Road
➡️ Bell Swamp Road
➡️ Return to U.S. 17
Northbound U.S. 17 Detour
Drivers traveling northbound should use one of the following options:
Before reaching the NC 87/George II Highway intersection:
➡️ Mill Creek Road
➡️ George II Highway
➡️ Funston Road
If drivers have already reached the Handee Hugo’s area:
➡️ NC 87

Authorities are urging motorists to drive carefully, expect delays, and follow posted detour signs as well as directions from law enforcement and traffic control personnel.
The original closure began Friday after a gas leak forced the shutdown of both northbound and southbound lanes of U.S. 17 in Winnabow. Officials initially closed southbound traffic near Green Hill Road before expanding the closure to both directions.
The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office said updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
