LELAND, N.C. (WWAY) — The Town of Leland has received a $3,000 grant from the Duke Energy Foundation to help plant approximately 24 trees along the Gateway Boulevard corridor.

Town officials said the project is part of Leland’s ongoing efforts to improve environmental sustainability, expand the community’s tree canopy and enhance shared public spaces.

Residents can expect to see town crews begin planting the trees this fall and early winter. Officials said the cooler temperatures and seasonal rainfall during that time provide ideal conditions for trees to establish healthy root systems in coastal North Carolina.

The grant is funded through the Duke Energy Foundation, which awards more than $30 million in charitable grants each year to communities across the country.
