Sunset River Gallery showcases student and instructor artwork in new exhibition

CALABASH, NC (WWAY) — Sunset River Gallery will spotlight the creativity and growth of its art students alongside the work of their instructors during a special exhibition, “Student Talents,” running from Aug. 1 through Sept. 5.
The exhibit will feature paintings and pottery created by more than 50 artists, ranging from beginner to intermediate students, as well as works from gallery instructors. Visitors can expect a variety of artistic styles and mediums, including watercolor, acrylic, mixed media and pottery.
Participating instructors include Brenda Riggins (watercolor), Samantha Spalti (mixed media), Jamie Futera (pottery), Rachel Sunnell (acrylic), Tracy Young (pottery), and Tonda Jeffcoat (pottery).
An opening reception will be held Saturday, Aug. 1, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the gallery. The event is free and open to the public, offering attendees an opportunity to meet both instructors and students and learn more about the gallery’s educational programs.
Gallery Director Samantha Spalti said one of the most rewarding aspects of teaching is watching students gain confidence in their artistic abilities. “It makes my heart happy to help artists learn to trust and even nurture their intuition,” Spalti said. “Seeing the little ‘aha moments’ that further their practice is invaluable.”
Pottery instructor Tracy Young echoed that sentiment, noting the therapeutic qualities of working with clay. “I teach beginners, and as we start with pinch pots and coiling, we really develop a relationship with the clay,” Young said. “There’s something so soothing and healing as you handle and hold it. I love to see the students as they progress and feel the connection.”
Those interested in taking art classes will have the opportunity to speak with instructors and participating students during the reception.
