Snow’s Cut to receive critical shoreline protection under new $7 million contract
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has awarded a more than $7 million contract for a shoreline stabilization project along Snow’s Cut, an effort aimed at protecting the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway and surrounding public lands in New Hanover County.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Wilmington District announced the contract was awarded to Cape Romain Contractors, Inc. for $7,015,897.42.
The project will address ongoing shoreline erosion along Snow’s Cut, the man-made waterway that connects the Cape Fear River to the sound waters of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. Officials say the erosion has created long-term concerns for nearby infrastructure, navigation safety and adjacent parklands.
According to the Corps, crews will install targeted shoreline protection measures designed to stabilize the banks, prevent additional erosion and protect public property while helping preserve the long-term reliability of one of the region’s busiest navigation channels.
Snow’s Cut is a critical section of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, serving both commercial and recreational boat traffic traveling along the East Coast.
Construction is expected to begin in the coming months. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Wilmington District will oversee the project and monitor construction quality throughout the effort.
Officials say the stabilization project is intended to improve the resilience of the waterway while reducing the risk of future bank failures that could threaten nearby infrastructure and navigation.
