Michigan woman life flighted from Wilmington after alleged assault

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) — A 22-year-old Michigan woman who was critically injured in an alleged assault in Wilmington last month has been transferred to a rehabilitation center in the Midwest, where she has begun an intensive recovery program.

Savannah Johnson was life flighted from Wilmington earlier this week. Photos shared by her family show her looking out the window of the medical aircraft while using a ventilator.

Her mother, Amanda Johnson, told WWAY the family has arrived at a rehabilitation center, where Savannah is expected to participate in a six- to eight-week program.

“You just make the best out of a bad situation,” Amanda said.

According to her mother, Savannah has made some progress but continues to face significant challenges.

“She does not have movement in her fingers, she’s able to move her arms, one leg can move — hopefully the other one will start soon as well,” Johnson said.

Savannah Johnson has been undergoing treatment after investigators say she was strangled at a home in Wilmington. She suffered multiple fractures and other serious injuries.

Authorities arrested 26-year-old Isaac Ruiz, a Camp Lejeune Marine, in connection with the assault.

Several online fundraisers have been created to support Johnson’s recovery, including one on Spotfund. The fundraiser’s largest donation, $2,000, came from someone claiming to be Isaac Ruiz.

The donation included the message: “Each day that passes you don’t realize how much stronger you are becoming… it will be over before you know it.”

The donation was posted June 18, about one week before Ruiz was arrested.

WWAY asked the Wilmington Police Department whether investigators have examined the donation or whether it is connected to Ruiz.

In a statement, a department spokesperson said:

“The original case against Mr. Ruiz remains an active, ongoing investigation. The Criminal Investigation Division is not able to provide further comment at this time.”

Amanda Johnson declined to discuss how Savannah Johnson and Ruiz met or the nature of their relationship.

She said the emotional recovery ahead will be just as important as the physical one.

“We believe that the mental part of this battle is such a huge part of healing. We will do everything we can to help Savannah overcome all the trauma in whatever way she needs to do it.”

Online fundraisers remain active to help cover Savannah Johnson’s medical expenses and long-term recovery.
