Columbus County man arrested months after alleged domestic assault

WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) — A Cerro Gordo man is facing multiple felony and misdemeanor charges after investigators say he assaulted a woman during a domestic violence incident in May.

According to Captain Robert Creech with the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office, Christopher Arron Blackwell, 36, is accused of assaulting Linda Carter on May 5 at a home on Coleman Cemetery Road.

Investigators allege Blackwell struck Carter with a firearm, choked her, and repeatedly hit her in the head and face with a closed fist. Carter was transported to Columbus Regional Healthcare System for treatment of her injuries.

Captain Creech said arrest warrants related to the incident were obtained on May 8 and again on July 22.

On July 27, a detective with the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop involving Blackwell in the parking lot of Roses in Whiteville, where he was taken into custody on the outstanding warrants.

Blackwell was booked into the Columbus County Detention Center and is charged with:

  • Possession of a firearm by a felon
  • Misdemeanor larceny
  • Misdemeanor crime of domestic violence
  • Assault on a female
  • Assault by pointing a gun
  • Assault with a deadly weapon
  • Assault by strangulation
  • Second-degree kidnapping

Jail records show Blackwell received a $50,000 secured bond for the possession of a firearm by a felon charge and a $10,000 secured bond for the misdemeanor larceny charge. No bond was listed for the remaining charges.
