Weekend events: Here’s what’s happening around the Cape Fear

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Looking for something to do around the Cape Fear this weekend? From family-friendly back-to-school events to live music and local festivals, there are several activities taking place across the region.

Kids Street Urgent Care will host a free Back-to-School Bash from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at its Wilmington clinic. The event will feature a bounce house, face painting, games, music and other family activities. Organizers also plan to give away 300 backpacks filled with school supplies on a first-come, first-served basis.

On Saturday, the Cameron Art Museum will host its Music and Mimosas event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event includes brunch, seasonal mimosas and live acoustic music from local singer-songwriter Justin Lacy. Saturday also marks Bank of America’s Museums on Us Weekend, allowing eligible Bank of America cardholders to receive free museum admission.

Also on Saturday, Gnomies Fest will take over the Cotton Exchange from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The festival will feature local vendors, live music, face painting, raffles, gnome hat decorating and a best-dressed gnome contest.

Meanwhile, WWAY’s annual Stuff the Backpack school supply drive continues through Aug. 7. Community members can donate new, unopened school supplies at the WWAY studios in Leland or at Flores & Foley on Castle Hayne Road in Wilmington. Donations such as backpacks, notebooks, binders, pencils and other classroom essentials will help local students prepare for the upcoming school year.
