Franklin Square Gallery celebrates 50 years of art in Southport

SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — Franklin Square Gallery is marking a major milestone this year as the Associated Artists of Southport (AAS) celebrates 50 years of serving the community through art, culture and education.

The anniversary celebration will officially begin with a free public kickoff event on Sunday, Aug. 23, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Franklin Square Gallery, located at 130 E. West Street in historic downtown Southport.

The celebration will feature artwork, live music, complimentary hors d’oeuvres and beverages, and opportunities for visitors to meet local artists. Guests can also enter a raffle for a chance to win one of three exclusive framed prints celebrating Southport’s artistic heritage.

As part of the event, AAS will recognize three of its longest-serving members for their decades of contributions to Franklin Square Gallery and the Southport arts community.

The kickoff also launches a six-month fundraising campaign aimed at preserving the historic gallery building, which is more than 120 years old.

The nonprofit organization is encouraging community members to donate $50, representing $1 for each year of the gallery’s history, to help fund needed painting and building repairs. Donors will be recognized on the gallery’s website, receive a digital certificate of appreciation and become members of the organization’s new 50th Anniversary Club, which includes special invitations and benefits throughout the anniversary celebration.

The fundraising campaign will culminate with a Golden Gala on March 6, 2027.

Franklin Square Gallery is home to more than 100 local artists and features original paintings, photography, pottery, glass art and prints, along with rotating exhibitions, workshops and educational programs.

Supported in part by the Brunswick Arts Council ARPA Program, the gallery continues to serve as a centerpiece of Southport’s arts community while providing free admission to visitors throughout the year.
