American Revolution Experience Coming to Brunswick County
CAROLINA SHORES, NC (WWAY) — A traveling exhibit exploring the people, places and decisions that shaped the American Revolution is coming to Brunswick County this month.
The American Revolution Experience will be on display Aug. 14-21 at the Southwest Brunswick Branch Library, located at 9400 Ocean Highway W. in Carolina Shores.
An opening ceremony is scheduled from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, featuring presentations on Brunswick County’s connections to the Revolutionary War.
District Attorney Jon David will present “George Washington’s Southern Tour: The Local Connection,” while Moores Creek National Battlefield Ranger Jason Howell will discuss “Loyalty Choices and Its Connection to the Battle of Moore’s Creek Bridge.”
The exhibit features 12 panels arranged in pairs that explore themes including “Choosing Sides,” “On the Front Lines” and “Freedom or Slavery.”
Three touchscreen displays provide additional information about people featured in the exhibit, historic locations connected to their stories and the course of the Revolutionary War. The displays also include animated maps showing how battles unfolded across the continent.
The exhibit opened at Daughters of the American Revolution headquarters in 2023 and has since traveled around the country as part of efforts commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States.
It is funded through American Battlefield Protection Program Interpretation Grants and the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.
The exhibit will be available during the library’s regular operating hours and is free to the public. It arrives in Brunswick County after being displayed in Sampson County.
The Daughters of the American Revolution is a nonprofit, nonpolitical service organization founded in 1890 for women who can prove direct lineage from a Revolutionary War patriot. The organization focuses on patriotism, education and historic preservation.
The DAR has more than 185,000 members in about 3,000 chapters worldwide, including more than 100 chapters in North Carolina.
The Brunswick Town Chapter has more than 180 members. According to the chapter, several members descend from Revolutionary War patriots who lived in Brunswick County, while the chapter’s membership represents descendants of more than 700 proven patriots from the original 13 colonies.
