Pigskin Preview: South Brunswick Cougars look to build on winning season
BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — South Brunswick football is coming off one of its best seasons in years. The Cougars finished 7-4, earned a share of the conference title and hosted a first-round playoff game in 2025, a major turnaround after going 0-10 the previous season. Now, the Cougars are looking to build on that success, while their head coach leans on his program’s culture and players during a challenging time.
“Winning is contagious and now our kids know what it feels like to win and so hopefully everyone’s working a little harder to keep that going. We tell them all the time last year’s touchdowns don’t win this year’s games,” said Daniel Yow the South Brunswick Head Football Coach.
After a move from the Mideastern conference to the Southeastern conference, South Brunswick has found more success against schools closer in size, and now the focus is keeping that momentum going. South Brunswick returns standout senior running back Amerius Revels, who will once again lead the Cougars’ ground game. Last season revels scored 9 touchdowns and ran over 1,000 yards.
“We can’t get overconfident just coming off of last season. So, we have to do better than we did last year so we are looking forward to that,” said Revels.
The team is also bringing back playmaking Junior Wide Receiver Edward Young, giving South Brunswick another dynamic weapon on offense. Young raked in 13 touchdowns with over 800 yards.
“As long as we stay down, keep grinding, keep getting better every day I feel like we will have a better season than last year. I wanna set the tone early that South Brunswick is really a good team, I want to feel like when we come on the field ‘oh yeah them boys are good’,” explained Young
The quarterback position remains open, while a younger defense will rely on a few experienced juniors and seniors to help lead the way.
“I never won a football game till last season and coming into that I wasn’t going to play but as the season went on it got better. Everything this season has been feeling really good. Were tough we don’t give up easy, we are heavy we got some good players were talented I’m really excited, “said Daniel Crossman a Senior Defensive End.
“I hope to get a lot of tackles I feel like this new defense will help me out a lot. Just play with a chip on my shoulder,” added Nate Earley a Senior Linebacker.
While Coach Yow faces challenges off the field, he says the team’s focus hasn’t wavered. The Cougars have their sights set on the first game of the season.
“It’s well known that me personally we’ve got some stuff going on in my personal life we don’t gotta get into too many details. Everybody knows that in my absence nothing’s changed, our standard still stays the same. Extremely proud that the guys have rallied around myself and my family and keep this thing going for us,” explained Coach Yow.
The turnaround may have been last season but, the Cougars believe their best football is still ahead. South Brunswick will start the 2026 season by taking on West Brunswick on August 21st at 7 p.m.
