Working mom writes children’s book on staying connected

(WWAY) — As families prepare for another school year, packed schedules filled with classes, work, activities, and travel can make it harder to find time together.

Colleen Joyce, CEO of Lawyer.com, is sharing how her own experience balancing a demanding career and motherhood inspired her to write a children’s book focused on staying connected.

Joyce said her job often requires her to travel for extended periods, which can be difficult for both her and her daughter. She said writing the book helped change the way her daughter viewed those trips, shifting the focus from the sadness of saying goodbye to the excitement of reuniting, sharing stories and spending time together.

Joyce hopes the book can also help other working parents find ways to connect with their children, both while they are away and when they are home.

“There’s a lot of guilt around working parents, right, and I think that this is an opportunity to change the conversation. Not that mommy and daddy are always working; it’s we’re working because it’s fulfilling to us, right, it makes us a better parent so that when we are with you, and we are present, we’re the best and most fulfilled we can be,” said Joyce.

Joyce said the message is not necessarily about finding more time in an already busy day, but about making the most of everyday moments families already share.
