Carolina Beach Dragon Boat Regatta returning for 13th year
CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — The Carolina Beach Dragon Boat Regatta will return next month for its 13th year, bringing dozens of races and hundreds of participants to the Carolina Beach Marina and Yacht Basin.
The event is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 19, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Organizers say more than 24 local amateur teams and visiting club teams are registered to compete in women’s, men’s and coed divisions. The event is expected to feature more than 36 head-to-head races throughout the day.
Teams will compete aboard 37-foot Chinese dragon boats, with all boats launching from the docks at Stoked Restaurant in Carolina Beach.
Organizers estimate the regatta draws between 1,500 and 2,000 spectators to Pleasure Island and includes more than 500 participants.
In addition to the races, the event will include a vendor marketplace around the marina.
The regatta also serves as a fundraiser. Organizers say the event has raised more than $150,000 over its history to benefit Ocean Cure and local children’s educational and athletic programs.
The event is free and open to the public, with several viewing areas around the marina.
