Health officials warn of rabies exposure after infected bat found in Bladen County
BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The Bladen County Health Department is warning residents after a bat found near Bladenboro tested positive for rabies.
Health officials said they were notified Wednesday, Aug. 12, that the bat had tested positive. Bladen County Animal Control officers recovered the deceased bat on Aug. 9 from a property along N.C. Highway 131 near Bladenboro. Todd Road is the closest intersecting roadway.
The Health Department is asking anyone who may have been bitten by the bat or exposed to its saliva during late July or early August to contact their healthcare provider or the Bladen County Health Department for a rabies risk assessment.
Rabies is spread through the bite of an infected animal or when saliva from an infected animal comes into contact with an open wound or mucous membranes, according to health officials. While rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms develop, it can be prevented if post-exposure treatment is started promptly.

Officials are also reminding residents to take precautions to reduce the risk of rabies, including:
- Keep dogs, cats and ferrets up to date on their rabies vaccinations, as required by North Carolina law.
- Seek immediate medical guidance if you believe you have been exposed to rabies.
- Avoid approaching stray or feral animals.
- Do not handle or approach wildlife, including bats, raccoons and other wild animals.

Health officials noted that raccoons and other wildlife serve as the primary reservoirs for rabies in North Carolina, and cases occur throughout the state.
