Wilmington man wins $100,000 top prize playing scratch-off game

WILMINGTON, NC — A Wilmington man is taking home more than $72,000 after winning a $100,000 top prize on a North Carolina Education Lottery scratch-off ticket.

Timothy Winstead purchased the winning $30 ticket for the $100,000 Cash Payday game at the Scotchman on Wrightsville Avenue in Wilmington.

Winstead claimed his prize Wednesday.

After required state and federal tax withholdings, he received $72,018.

The $100,000 Cash Payday game debuted in March with 80 top prizes. According to the North Carolina Education Lottery, 56 of those prizes remain.

The odds of winning the game’s top prize are 1 in 76,752.

Lottery funds also support education programs across the state. Last year, education programs in New Hanover County received more than $11.3 million in lottery funding.
