Avelo Airlines takes Wilmington middle school students on aviation career exploration trip

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Twenty-five New Hanover County middle school students got a firsthand look at careers in aviation during Avelo Airlines’ third annual career exploration flight from Wilmington International Airport.

Avelo partnered with the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce and New Hanover County’s Career and Leadership Development Academy for the program.

Students from seven New Hanover County middle schools flew Thursday from Wilmington International Airport to Baltimore/Washington International Airport and returned the same day.

During the trip, students learned about a variety of aviation careers, including pilots, flight attendants and airport operations. They also explored behind-the-scenes careers in areas such as marketing, communications and airline scheduling.

While on the flight, students spoke with Avelo flight attendants about their training, daily responsibilities and experiences working for the airline.

In Baltimore, representatives from BWI Airport discussed airport operations, attracting airlines, managing air traffic and challenges faced by a major international airport.

After returning to Wilmington, students visited the flight deck of an Avelo Boeing 737. First Officer Mikka Yamane spoke with the students about her flight training, operational checklists and the tools used by pilots.

The annual program is designed to introduce students to the wide range of career opportunities available in the aviation industry.
