NC Supreme Court Justice meets with Wilmington faith leaders

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) — North Carolina Supreme Court Justice Anita Earls met with local faith leaders Friday in downtown Wilmington to discuss justice, equality and community issues.

Several faith leaders joined Earls at Little Drum Landing near Wilmington’s riverfront for the gathering.

Earls has worked in civil rights for more than 30 years, with a focus on issues including voting rights, fair housing and equal educational opportunities.

She said her faith plays a role in her commitment to treating people with dignity and fairness, while meetings like Friday’s help her better understand communities across North Carolina.

“I’ve had several cases in federal court here in Wilmington, it’s really important to me to understand the needs of people across the state and try to make sure that our court is ruling in a way that is in everyone’s best interest,” Earls said.

Earls is seeking to retain her seat on the North Carolina Supreme Court in November’s general election. She will face former state Rep. Sarah Stevens.

WWAY reached out to Stevens’ campaign for comment but had not received a response as of Friday.
