BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Brunswick County Schools says it will not renew its current agreements with the YMCA of Southeastern North Carolina for after-school, summer camp and full-day camp programming.

The district said the decision follows a review of concerns involving student supervision and safety during programs held in school facilities.

According to Brunswick County Schools, the review led officials to reassess staffing expectations, supervision practices, safety procedures and the overall structure of future after-school programming.

“When concerns involving the care and supervision of children are brought to our attention, we have a responsibility to carefully review those concerns and determine whether changes are needed,” the district said in a message to parents.

The district said it will now pursue alternative options for after-school care while evaluating the structure and safeguards it believes are needed to serve students and families.

School officials acknowledged the decision could create a significant inconvenience for families who rely on the programs for child care, particularly working parents.

“We sincerely apologize for the disruption this transition may cause,” the district said.

Brunswick County Schools did not provide details about the specific concerns or incidents that prompted the review, saying matters involving students and personnel cannot be discussed publicly.

The district said additional information about alternative after-school care options was included in a ClassDojo message sent to families.

Brunswick County Schools also thanked the YMCA of Southeastern North Carolina for the services it has provided to students and families.
